DPW is working on a water main break at M71 and Smith Ave. Traffic

DPW is working on a water main break at M71 and Smith Ave. Traffic should expect lane shifts. If possible, please avoid the area.

*We have a lot of good questions in the comments and will address them here:

Yes, we have had a lot of water main breaks over the last week and yes, many have been in the same areas.

About a week ago, we experienced some fluctuations in water pressure at the water filtration plant. These fluctuations were minor and didn’t cause problems for healthy water mains. Unfortunately, we have many old water mains and experienced several breaks.

Although the problem at the plant has been resolved, when we work on water mains we have to open and close valves to isolate the break. This puts extra pressure on surrounding mains and can cause a domino effect. For example, in the Monroe St area, we recently had 3 water main breaks, one after another.

Like many communities, we have aging infrastructure. Fortunately, we have amazing Public Works staff who work 24/7 to fix things when they break and make sure our residents have safe water. They are unsung heroes and we are forever grateful for their skill, expertise, and dedication.
