Owosso is now offering six encore classes to our elementary students

Education

Owosso Public Schools issued the following announcement on Oct. 8.

Owosso is now offering six encore classes to our elementary students instead of the five. We have added a STEM Class (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) which students are loving!

For the last four weeks, Emerson STEM Teacher Mrs. Mary Hankins led her 3rd-5th grade students in lessons studying inventors and followed up with an interactive “Builders Week.” Each class was divided into teams, given three minutes to discuss what they would build and then given 20 minutes to build their projects with Keva Planks, Unifix Cubes, and Legos. After construction was complete, the class did a “walk-around” to view everyone's inventions and each group had an opportunity to describe their process and their project. Students talk about their design failures and problem-solve them which is where students learn to improve and grow.

“I am really excited about this new class we are offering, and the Builders Week was a huge success. The overall goal in 3rd-5th grade is to think about an invention, build it, and have an Inventor's Gallery to show during spring parent teacher conferences,” Mrs. Hankins shared. “We still have a lot to study and the students are excited about it (I am too!!).”
