City of Owosso issued the following announcement on Nov. 28.
Porch pirates. Package thieves. Grinch's. Whatever you call them, they destroy the holiday spirit by stealing the unattended packages from your front porch. The window of theft can be as small as a few minutes, and can happen in the blink of an eye.
There are some steps you can take to prevent the theft of packages left on your porch:
1) Have packages sent with "signature required". The package can't be left on the porch without a person signing for the delivery.
2) Track your packages online so you can monitor its status.
3) Give special delivery instructions to prevent the package from being stolen from the front door. Request the package be delivered to an area out of sight like the back porch, side door, or garage area. This keeps packages out of plain view from foot traffic and thieves driving by your home.
4) Ask a trusted neighbor to pickup your packages from your porch if you aren't going to be home.
5) If your employer allows it, have the packages delivered to your business address.
6) Invest in a security camera. Not only do they deter criminal activity but they can assist the police in identifying a suspect if this crime was to happen.
It is important to be proactive and stay one step ahead of package thieves. By removing the opportunity for them to steal your unattended packages, you can ensure a happy holiday season. #PorchPirates #Grinches #SantaClausIsWatching
