A video shared by the Michigan Republican Party claiming to show ballot drop boxes left unlocked in Lansing has city and state officials defensive, claiming the video is misleading.
Lansing City Clerk Chris Swope said that absentee ballots had not been sent out to voters yet when the video was taken, and that the envelope shown in the bottom of the drop box is not a ballot envelope, according to coverage by CBS Detroit.
“I think this is disingenuous to be spreading this and saying the election is not secure,” Swope said, according to CBS Detroit. “These are safe, secure drop boxes that are used in places throughout Michigan for many, many years, including Lansing.”
Swope denied that the drop boxes were left unlocked after ballots were mailed. The publication and dissemination of the video was referred to Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel for allegations of election misinformation.
