MICHIGAN INSURANCE AND FINANCIAL SERVICES: Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services Highlights Importance of Flood Insurance During National Preparedness Month

Michigan Insurance and Financial Services issued the following announcement on Sept. 30.

As National Preparedness Month comes to a close, the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) is reminding consumers that flood insurance is an important part of a household’s disaster recovery plan.

“Many homeowners are unaware that standard homeowners insurance policies do not pay for flood or water damage,” said DIFS Director Anita Fox. “As we’ve seen this summer in Michigan, a disastrous flood can happen almost anywhere, even outside of floodplains, and DIFS is urging all Michiganders to review their insurance before disaster strikes to ensure that their families and property are protected in the event of a flood or other catastrophe.”

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, flooding is the most common and costly natural disaster in the United States, with nearly $40 billion in damage done in 2019 alone. They can rise with little to no warning even in areas which do not traditionally flood and, as a result, they kill more Americans each year than tornadoes, hurricanes, or lightning.

“Homeowners have coverage options, including federal flood insurance from the National Flood Insurance Program, to make sure they are protected against flooding, storm water, or sewer back-up,” said Fox. “It is important to discuss these options with your insurance agent or your insurance company well before the waters rise.”
