Michigan Insurance and Financial Services issued the following announcement on Sept.10.
The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) Director Anita Fox and the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA) Director Zaneta Adams will co-host a virtual auto insurance town hall to answer veterans’ questions about Michigan’s new auto insurance law.
The new auto insurance law gives drivers new choices for policies issued or renewed after July 1, 2020. Some of those choices are impacted by drivers’ health insurance coverage, and the live town hall will explain those choices and what they mean for those with veteran and military health care coverage.

On Sept. 2, DIFS issued Bulletin 2020-37-INS, which advises veterans and their dependents that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has determined that enrollment in VA benefits does not qualify as Qualified Health Coverage under the new law because it excludes or limits coverage for injuries related to motor vehicle accidents. This means that consumers cannot use VA coverage to exclude Personal Injury Protection medical coverage from their auto insurance policies.
Michigan’s new auto insurance law lowers average statewide costs for Michigan drivers, maintains the highest coverage options in the country, and strengthens consumer protections. For policies that issue or renew after July 1, 2020, drivers need to determine the amount of coverage that best suits their needs. Learn more at www.michigan.gov/autoinsurance.
