Michigan Insurance and Financial Services issued the following announcement on July 10.
Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) Director Anita Fox issued a statement condemning the Trump administration’s recent filing with the U.S. Supreme Court in support of the lawsuit seeking to eliminate the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
“Millions of Michiganders are able to lead healthier lives thanks to the ACA, and it is critical to the future vitality of our state that it is protected,” said Fox. “It is disheartening that this move to dismantle the ACA comes in the midst of a pandemic when health insurance is most critical, when so many families have lost their employer-provided health care coverage, and when families are struggling from the economic impact of this crisis. If successful, the lawsuit would strip coverage from more than 20 million people nationally, including more than 1 million Michiganders.”
Millions of Michiganders benefit from the ACA every day, including:
Nearly 750,000 Healthy Michigan Plan beneficiaries who are covered by Michigan’s Medicaid expansion program allowed by the ACA.
Nearly 300,000 Michiganders who get coverage in the Health Insurance Marketplace created by the ACA, 250,000 of them receiving federal tax subsidies to lower monthly health insurance premiums.
More than 70,000 young adults who are insured through their parents.
More than 200,000 seniors and people with disabilities who save on prescription drugs through expanded drug coverage.
More than 6 million insured Michiganders who do not have to pay out-of-pocket for preventative services such as flu shots, vaccines, mammograms, and screenings for heart disease, cancer, depression, diabetes, and more.
More than 1.7 million Michiganders with pre-existing conditions who can access coverage without fear of insurance company denials.
“Governor Whitmer has been a vocal champion for increased access to affordable health care coverage. Michigan lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have embraced the ACA to expand Medicaid and support the health of hundreds of thousands of Michiganders,” said Fox. “Now, more than ever, rather than dismantling the ACA, we must work together to ensure access to comprehensive, affordable coverage, so we can look to a healthier future for all Michiganders.”
