Michigan Insurance and Financial Services issued the following announcement on April 30.
The Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) will continue to offer live online town hall meetings to help Michigan drivers learn and ask questions about Michigan’s new auto insurance law and the choices they will need to make for policies issued or renewed after July 1, 2020. These town hall meetings will supplement existing online resources and replace many of the in-person events that were canceled due to the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.
Nearly 1,000 people attended the first four town halls, which were held April 22-28.
“DIFS is available to provide support as Michiganders learn about their new auto insurance choices and get answers to their questions,” said DIFS Director Anita Fox. “The new auto insurance law will provide much-needed savings to drivers and will allow them to pick an auto insurance plan that will best meet their family’s budget and needs.”
For policies that renew after July 1, 2020, drivers will need to determine the amount of coverage that best suits their needs. Drivers will be able to choose a level of Personal Injury Protection (PIP) Medical Coverage and determine the level of Bodily Injury (BI) Coverage that best protects their family. Sample forms outlining the choices are available on DIFS’ website. By participating in the town hall meetings, drivers will learn about the upcoming choices and will have the opportunity to submit questions to DIFS’ insurance analysts.
The DIFS Auto Insurance website, www.michigan.gov/autoinsurance, contains a schedule of weekly town halls, including instructions on how to participate in the town halls, details on changes to the law, and instructional videos on how to fill out the new forms that insurance agents and companies have to provide drivers when they issue or renew the new policies.
Upcoming town halls will take place on:
- Thursday, April 30 at 3 p.m.
- Monday, May 4 at noon
- Wednesday, May 6 at 5:30 p.m.
“DIFS has answered questions for hundreds of Michiganders and will continue to provide support as drivers prepare to make important choices related to their auto insurance coverage starting this summer,” said Fox. “Drivers can learn about their choices by attending a virtual town hall or visiting DIFS’ auto insurance website at Michigan.gov/autoinsurance.”
