Corunna enters into sale agreement for former Shiawassee County Medical Care Facility for veterans community

Veteran

Two years after the former Shiawassee County Medical Care Facility closed, the city of Corunna has entered into a purchase agreement with Fiddler’s Green LLC, a nonprofit organization, to open a veteran housing community.

The sale includes the medical facility and 5.78 acres of property that it currently occupies. The former county MSU Extension, buildings and grounds buildings are not included in this sale.

City officials expect the sale to close in January, and once that happens, Fiddler’s Green can move forward with its plans to open a veteran housing community in the 63,177-square-foot building. According to the Independent News Group, Fiddler’s Green expects to open the new housing community by the middle of 2020.

This isn’t the first facility that Fiddler’s Green opened for veterans. The organization opened an independents living facility for veterans in Bad Axe. The renovations, furnishings and equipment that are needed to make the former Pleasant View assisted living facility into a veterans’ housing community are expected to cost more than $1 million, say city officials.

Corunna City Manager Joe Sawyer told Independent News Group it’s a good fit for the building and community. He told the Independent News Group that the use conforms to allowed uses in the zoning district.

“It is nice to see the facility … move forward in service to our veterans,” he said.

The former Shiawassee County Medical Care facility at 729 S. Norton St. closed after the Pleasant View rehab and nursing home was completed in 2017. The city has maintained the Norton Street facility since then. The Shiawassee County Medical Care Facility opened in 1953 and had beds for 78 patients. It was renovated and expanded throughout the years and increased capacity to 136 beds.

Fiddler’s Green will provide a $100,000 down payment of the $500,000 sale price. The nonprofit will pay closing costs. Corunna will carry a land contract for five years to account for the remaining balance owed.
